With sadness we announce the passing of Eric Blair Appleby at Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Monday, May 29, 2023.
Eric was born in Toronto in 1929. His mother, Rena Appleby, his father, Arthur Appleby and his sister, Marilyn Brougham, predeceased him.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 69 years, Marion (Lawson); his son Jeffrey (Katherine); daughter Jan Gorham (David); grandchildren, Amy, Eric, Maks, Alex and Cottie.
Eric attended McGill University where he received his Bachelor of Commerce. He then went on to obtain his Law Degree from the University of Toronto. Eric and Marion were married in 1954. Employment followed in New York City and Baltimore.
In 1961, they moved to Fredericton, where Eric opened a law practice. After practicing law for 10 years, he established Maritime Law Book, a leading Canadian legal publication. Eric proudly owned and operated Maritime Law Book for 45 years. He retired at the age of 85.
Eric took great pride playing for the Montreal Royals of 1949. The Royals were the first team east of Toronto to win the Memorial Cup.
The family will be celebrating Eric’s legacy and life privately. He will be remembered for his innate kindness, honesty, and fairness.

So very sad to hear about Mr. Appleby’s passing. What a kind, caring, compassionate man. I couldn’t have asked for a better boss for my 34 years that I worked at Maritime Law Book. Sincere condolences to Mrs. Appleby and family.

Dear Marion, Jan and Jeff
Heather sent me the link to this and I am so sorry. I have very fond memories of you all when we visited in Fredericton and especially at the farm.
I am very aware of how inclusive of me and accepting of my position in the family as you were at a very difficult time. Thank you for that.
We enjoyed going to Jan’s (the hand bells) and Jeff’s weddings and the visits you made up here for special birthdays and Eleanor’s wedding.
When Bruce died (OMG it is almost 8 years ago) Jan sent the loveliest note that I so appreciated.
Bruce and Eric had a very special relationship that was almost inexplicable. Eric lived a full and meaningful life. We will all miss him.
Sincerely,
Barb

To the Appleby Family: You would never meet a better person than Mr. Appleby. A gentleman thru and thru and always with a smile . My first meeting was on the service desk at Clark’s Chevrolet and years later as a business owner. We will miss his kindness., John Brown

Dear Marion, Jeff and Jan,
I am so sorry. The legal system lost a visionary leader; the world lost a wonderful, kind human being. But even all that cannot compare to the loss for the three of you. I shall always value the times our families shared when I was a child and the use of Eric’s law practice robes – which I still have – during my law practice years).
It was an honour to have known Eric and the Appleby family.
Linda
